Week 4 - Plays, Plays, Plays!
For this week in the arts class, we focused very heavily on theatre.
The play was about an actor, played by Andrew Scott who was also in the BBC Sherlock (Fantastic actor), who was going through an identity crisis as he hit his middle age. A lot of the play had to do with the effects his relationships had on the people around him, such as a one night stand turning a girl into an obsessive stalker, a man who came to get his play reviewed turning into an obsessive stalker, and his friend's husband seducing him, and claiming to love him, before revealing he was one of the multiple affairs.
Through all of this, the people around him, his closest friends, treated him as though he were awful and immoral for sleeping around, cheating, and being overdramatic. However, all these friends behaved the same way he did. His friend Helen, whose husband he had slept with, had been cheating on her spouse for over a year, and their friend Morris was also sleeping wither her husband for nearly that time. his friends were all equally as bad, if not worse than him, yet he was consistently treated as though he were horrible for his actions, while all others were ignored or forgiven.
It was a fantastic play, and I found the character Gary, the main character, to be amazingly sympathetic. I also really enjoyed that they switched genders to make characters gay and bisexual in a way that makes it really normal, so that was really rad.
This was also great in that the production itself was truly fantastic.
All the creative choices made for this production, like the pinatas, the multitude of Pucks, good ol' Henrick from the audience, and really everything about it added so much to the story. Most people have at least a mild grasp on what happens in this particular play, and yet I still found myself surprised by many of the things that happened along the way.
The play is really indescribable in the ways I found it unique and amazing. Really there was so much going on that was so wonderful, so unique, and so funny I know I'll never see another play like it again.
Present Laughter
First, on Monday we went to the Old Vic theatre. The theatre was a bit small and located very near the dorms.

The Tempest
The next play we went to see was a production of the Tempest done by the Creation Theatre in Oxford. after a rousing game of mini-golf with Becca, Blakley, and Kristina, and eating something I shouldn't have at a LUSH store, we proceeded to our doomed cruise with the Creation Cruise Line. After wrecking our ship in a horrid Tempest we traveled around Oxford, putting together the pieces to solve the plot of the Tempest. Along the way, we encountered zombies, spirits, and a guy with a stick who looked like Lex Luther. We witnessed the falling in love of Ferdinand and Miranda and even got a chance to dance at the wedding party.
The play and the adventure that went with it were a truly unique and amazing experience. It was a lot of fun to not just watch a play, but truly participate in it and experience it.
Also, I got Knighted, so Yee Haw.
Midsummer Night's Dream - The Globe
The following day we went to The Globe theatre's production of Midsummer Night's Dream. This was a really cool experience in multiple regards. The first being getting to visit the Globe theatre. It's a very beautiful theatre, and its really cool to sit (or in our case, stand) in a space modeled after Shakespeare's original theatre, and watch his work come to life. This was also great in that the production itself was truly fantastic.
All the creative choices made for this production, like the pinatas, the multitude of Pucks, good ol' Henrick from the audience, and really everything about it added so much to the story.
